Weekly Market Report for October 22nd

Welcome to the Bondi Weekly Market report, your go-to for all the highs & lows of the week. Change is hard, and the switch from Ontario-grown vegetables to imported ones is no exception. In my opinion, it may be even more challenging than getting used to a fresh haircut when you decided on … bangs, and that is rough. But we’re embracing it, and with such great customers, it's not so hard to jump in feet first!

Here's a little preview of what we've got lined up for the week:

⭐️ Important Update on the California heat wave and transition of crops from Ontario over to Mexico. ⭐️

Market Recap : What’s up, what’s down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • Transition to U.S. and Mexico for Warm Vegetables - Starting last week, the local supply of warm-season vegetables ended. Consequently, we started procuring a number of items from the United States and Mexico. This transition is expected to lead to certain shortages and an increase in prices. More details can be found in the section titled "Red Flags" below.

  • PEPPERS RED , YELLOW & SHISHITO- We have officially transitioned to Mexico, resulting in a price increase. Ontario field peppers are done for the year.

  • TOMATO CLUSTER & TOMATO HOT HOUSE - Greenhouses are experiencing reduced yields for the upcoming month. Consequently, it is anticipated that prices will gradually rise over the next few weeks.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • LIME - The current yield of small fruit crops in Mexico is exceptionally favorable. Harvest levels have significantly increased, and prices have stabilized.

  • ZUCCHINI GREEN & YELLOW - We've officially made the switch to Mexico and the yields have been great! The Ontario crops have wrapped up for the year.

  • PEPPERS ORANGES - Yields on this color are unseasonably high, driving down prices.

🚩Red Flags🚩: Supply & Quality Recap

  • Transition to U.S. and Mexico for Warm Vegetables - We flagged last week that the warm vegetable supply has ended, and we are begining to source the Roma Tomatoes, Jalapeno Peppers, Eggplant, Zucchini (Green/Yellow) from the U.S. and Mexico moving forward and the transition comes with some price increases. Read more about it here!

  • California Heat Spell - The heat wave that's been affecting Salinas and King City since last week is still going strong, and it's taking a toll on crops like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and leafy greens. These veggies are showing signs of heat stress, which might impact their quality and shelf life. As growers get ready to shift operations to Yuma, AZ, this could influence yields in the coming weeks. You can read more about it here: California heat wave leaves quality problems behind - Produce Blue Book

  • Shiso Leaves - We had an unexpectedly large order that cleared us out last week, coupled with delays from FedEx, leading to shortages. This is not expected to carry over into this week.

  • ACE Rosemary Facaccia - Production delays caused shortages last week. Back in stock and ready for ordering.

  • Chestnut Mushrooms - Slow growth contributed to shortages last week. They are back in stock and we don’t expect more delays

  • Frankies Olive Oil - Several substantial orders have depleted our inventory, and we will be unable to replenish stock until next week. Consequently, shortages may occur, and substitutions with alternative brands should be anticipated in the interim.

Product Changes this week:

  • Update on Heartee Premium Mushroom Mix - we’re phasing out the Heartee Premium mix this week. We've found that most customers prefer ordering their favorite mushrooms individually rather than the mix, so here’s what we’ll continue to keep in stock by the case:

    • King Oyster Black 2 LB

    • Oyster Blue 2 LB

    • Oyster Yellow 2 LB

    • Pom Pom (Lion’s Mane) 2 LB

    • Chestnut 2 LB

  • Belgioioso Burrata & Stracciatella Update - Belgioioso Burrata is out of stock until the new year due to federal dairy quotas, which are now exhausted.

    • Starting last week Bella Casara Burratini 125g (CODE 06863) will be our substitute.

    • This also affects BelGioioso Stracciatella. We’ll be replacing it with Bella Casara Stracciatella 6/400g (CODE 07819) until the end of 2024 effective immediately.

  • Kennebec Potato - On pause this week due to poor quality.
