Market Recap : What’s up, what’s down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • TOMATO GRAPE MEDLEY - The cultivation of crops in Ontario has concluded, and operations are now shifting to greenhouse facilities in Mexico.

  • LIMES - Cold weather in the growing region is causing quality issues. Expect higher prices as we approach the end of the year.

  • KALE -The complete transition to Mexican products is being affected by colder weather, which is causing a delay in the increase of volume.

  • CELERY & BRUSSEL SPROUTS- There is a restricted supply following the American Thanksgiving period. It is anticipated that the month of December will experience fluctuations in price.

  • GRAPE TOMATOES - The volume remains constrained as a result of the persistent damage caused by the recent hurricane in Florida, which is consequently leading to increased costs for greenhouse crops produced in Mexico.

  • DAIKON -The local crop from Ontario and Quebec has been fully harvested. We are now transitioning to sourcing crops from the United States and Mexico.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • IN TRANSITION - After three weeks of elevated costs, prices are beginning to stabilize, and a gradual decrease is anticipated. The following items have experienced increased pricing due to market transitions:

    • Iceberg Lettuce

    • Curly Parsley & Italian Parsley

    • Strawberries

    • Celery

    • Green Leaf Lettuce

    • Romaine Lettuce

    • Cauliflower

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • Watermelon shortages and quality issues in Ontario are due to poor yields in Central America caused by bad weather, combined with delays in Mexican imports. Strong seasonal demand and tight supply have driven prices higher. Relief is expected soon as shipments from Mexico ramp up, but prices will remain elevated due to ongoing constraints

  • Mushroom Supply Update: With U.S. Thanksgiving behind us, Ontario and Quebec growers are no longer stretched supporting demand across the border. Cremini inventory is already back to normal, and we expect Portobellini and Portobello to follow soon. While supply may take another day or two to fully stabilize, the situation is improving rapidly. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we move past the holiday rush!

  • Peeled carrots: We've had a bit of a rush on orders in the last 2 weeks, which has led to some shortages. If you have these items on menus for events, please give our team a heads-up or place orders early so we can plan accordingly, especially as the holidays approach.

Product Changes this week:

  • Boneless Proscuitto - Altobello Prosciutto Di Norcia will no longer be available. All proscuitto will now be coming from San Michele. Read more about it in last weeks Market Report or search online for product codes 10982, 11001, 10983

  • Pasta program delivery schedule updates: If you want fresh pasta delivered on Tuesday, make sure to place your order by noon on Friday. Now, you can enjoy deliveries on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday!
