Market Recap: What’s up, what’s down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • SUGAR SNAP PEAS - Both China and Peru are experiencing a short supply of crops, leading to concerns about availability and pricing. While the price is escalated, Snow Peas make a viable alternative, as their prices remain relatively low and stable!

  • ASPARAGUS - Asparagus productivity is down, causing prices to increase, and they will continue to be high for the next two weeks.

  • CORN- We're nearing the end of the season, and stock is running low. With demand on the rise and supply dwindling, it's a bit of a squeeze. Expect new products to arrive from the USA by the end of the month.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • DILL WEED - Quebec & Ontario crops are back to normal levels, the warm weather is bringing it up to standard yield quantities for this time of year, ensuring a stable supply for the market and potentially stabilizing prices after previous fluctuations.

  • PEELED GARLIC -Most major suppliers have now received their containers that were delayed due to the CN Rail strike, resulting in a price drop.

  • BRUSSEL SPROUTS -We're getting better supplies in California and Ontario. Expect pricing to continue to be favorable through Thanksgiving.

  • CAULIFLOWER -Better supplies coming out of California are resulting in a price drop!

Feeling Fancy 💚 🥗

As the field crop season wraps up in the next 2 weeks, we’re turning to our amazing local indoor growers to keep that fresh crunch going & Vision Greens is ready to step up to the plate! Here’s what we learned when our sales team toured their facility last week.

  • Based out of Welland, ON

  • These greens are harvested 1 day before we pick them up. As a result, the shelf life is longer since you eliminate the 10-day travel period that most greens undergo when coming from California.

  • Scientific research shows hydroponically grown greens, like Vision Greens, are considered superior to organic greens.

  • They use no pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs.

  • Feel good about their low carbon footprint! They use 90% less land & water than a field grown green

  • These greens are hardy, so they stay fresh and crisp when you dress them up on a plate, giving you great value for your money.

  • The Fancy Mix contains: Crispy Green Leaf, Lolla Rosa, Green Batavia, and Red Fire Spring Lettuces

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • Rapini - We will be experiencing a gap in product availability until Sunday. The issues noted below with broccoli are causing a trickle-down effect and also impacting rapini this week.

  • Broccoli / Broccoli - We are currently facing shortages and quality issues with products from Salinas, California, and Central Mexico due to increased insect activity and damage from Diamondback moth larvae, worsened by extended high temperatures. While this type of activity is typical for late summer and early fall, the conditions have been harder to control this season. Growers are working hard to manage the situation, and we are closely monitoring quality on our end. This is expected to continue for the next 2 weeks. We are also purchasing from local growers to avoid supply gap and quality issues so hopefully weather will remain warm so they can help fill in!

  • Cremini #1 & #2 Mushrooms - Both are facing slower growth due to heat and compost issues, limiting supply. Ontario growers are also supporting US retail chains, adding to the shortage. We've exhausted all options to meet demand, but supplies remain tight, with the US also experiencing delays. We will continue to see shortages this week on creminis, including sliced products. This may also lead to a gap in Portobellini and Portobello mushrooms. Growers are working to increase production. For now, consider substituting with White mushrooms in the meantime!

  • St. Brigid’s Butter -Production delay on raw materials is still ongoing from the manufacturer. We expect to restock today if all goes to plan!

  • Green Beans - Heavy rain last week resulted in a disruption of supply. However, the situation has stabilized, and we are fully stocked for this week.

  • San Pellegrino Sparkling Water - Internal error causing shortages. Items are readily available and in stock!

  • Pineapple - Quantity is limited, and what we are getting is ripening quicker than expected. Prices will remain elevated for at least another month. You may receive subs in pack sizes to avoid shortages.
