READY FOR THE LONG WEEKEND?

Weekly Market Report for August 27th

Welcome to the Bondi Weekly Market report, your go-to for all the highs & lows of the week. The weather in the GTA is starting to get that fall vibe, but if you're like us, you're not quite ready to swap out summer fun for squash soup. This week at the Bondi warehouse to keep that summer spirit going, we're turning up the heat with a fresh batch of spicy peppers, shining light on amazing local fruits, and our sales team is grilling up burgers out back for our hard working drivers.

Here's a little preview of what we've got lined up for the week:

⭐️ Next week is a short week. We will be closed on Monday September 2nd so please remember to bulk up your weekend orders.

🥒 Cucumber prices are going up! Expect elevated prices until the 1st week of October. Read more about it below.

🔥 Spicy Peppers are coming in hot, so this week, our mantra is WWDZD… What would David Zilber do? Get fermenting friends!

🥔 Some changes on the Burbank Potato supplier for the next ~2 weeks.

Market Recap : What’s up, what’s down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • CUCUMBERS - Greenhouse growers started their crop rotation earlier this year. This means we will see cucumber prices increase significantly week over week due to very limited supply. These supply issues and higher prices usually stick around until the 1st week of October, then things will start to settle down and prices will drop. We are going to do our best to keep stock of #1 mediums but over the next 4 weeks but you may notice substitutes of #1 & #2 smalls to avoid shortages.

  • PEELED GARLIC - CN Rail strike causing supply issues, driving up prices on current stock available from shippers. Size variations may be used to avoid shortages. Learn more about how the CN Rail strike is affecting us here.

  • CAULIFLOWER - Rain in Quebec and inclement weather in California have driven up prices. We anticipate this to be a temporary situation.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • BRUSSLE SPROUTS (code 2225) - As supplies from Salinas and Quebec improve, we expect the market prices to continue to drop.

  • CHAYOTE (code 2325) - Supply is slowly getting back to normal, we should see further price drops in the upcoming months.

  • KALE GREEN (code 2597) - The local season is in full swing, leading to an abundant supply. As a result, market prices are steadily adjusting downward, offering a great opportunity to stock up on fresh, locally-sourced kale.

  • PEPPER MINI SWEET (code 4615) - Local field mini sweets are slowly becoming more steadily available driving down the prices.

  • PECORINO ROMANO (code 8108) & PARMIGIANO REGGIANO AGED 24MO. (code 7313) - This week, we’re offering price relief on both cheeses. Enjoy the savings per kg!

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • The Rail Strike - As we continue to monitor the impacts of the recent freight disruptions due to the rail strike, we want to inform you that only a small number of SKUs will be affected. Specifically, these are items we import from China that are then transported by rail across the country, such as garlic, peeled garlic, and ginger. While prolonged disruptions could have impacted the long-term supply and pricing of these products, the immediate threat has been alleviated now that the Ministry of Labour has ended the strike and required unions to return to work. We do expect minor supply gaps and slight price increases over the next 2–3 weeks as supply normalizes and operations return to their usual pace. We will continue to monitor any potential appeals and keep you informed of any developments that may affect your operations.

  • Burratini - Oversold again last week but product is back in full stock

  • Caulilini -Due to ongoing inclement weather in California, we're experiencing significant supply gaps for Caulilini, a product already limited in availability. These disruptions are expected to last for the next couple of weeks, potentially impacting availability and pricing. We recommend planning your orders in advance to navigate this temporary shortage.

  • White Button Mushrooms - Increased demand and potential supply slowdowns due to heat waves and persistent hot, humid weather are typical in August. We also see this during winter when extreme cold makes it challenging for grow rooms to moderate outside air before it reaches spores and blocks.

  • Edible Flowers - We’re experiencing delivery delays from Fresh Origins due to customs, leading to shortages. These issues often escalate around stat holidays, so while we expect some resolution this week, they may continue into next week after the Monday closure. Additionally, Fresh Origins is facing heat and dry weather in California, affecting the availability of certain products.

  • Broccoli Crowns - Heavy rain and heat in Quebec and Ontario caused supply fluctuations, but we’re seeing better availability this week

  • Lemons - We’re nearing the end of our South African lemon supply. You might notice the fruit becoming softer and riper.

  • Stracciatella - We experienced a manufacturer issue with Stracciatella, causing breakdowns before the best-before date last week. The new product going forward will be fine.

Product Changes this week:

  • Burbank Potatoes - We've finished up the old crop under the Red Truck label. For now, we'll be switching to Idaho bakers in boxes until the first batch of new crop potatoes from Quebec arrives under the Eagle Export brand early this week. Don't worry, Red Truck will be back with the new crop in the 2nd week of September. Thanks for your understanding!

  • Oranges - We’ll continue with South African Navel oranges as a sub for Valencia Oranges at consistent pricing and the sizing will be 105ct. In about two weeks, we'll switch to Midknight Valencia oranges. They may have occasional seeds but offer a sweeter taste and are ideal for juicing, available in 105ct and 88ct sizes.
