Market Recap : What’s up, what’s down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • ROUND ROLLED TOMATOES - Due to severe crop damage in Florida and seasonal disruptions, USA Round Tomato prices are set to spike starting TODAY, with a 50% increase expected and another 20-30% likely in the coming weeks. Hurricanes Helene and Milton have impacted Florida tomato supplies, creating limited availability, higher demand in California, reduced quality, and record-high prices over the next 6-8 weeks. Stability is anticipated by mid-December to early January. HERE’S THE SUB YOU NEED!

  • IN TRANSITION - Please be aware that the following items will experience increased pricing over the next 2-3 weeks due to market transitions: Iceberg Lettuce, Curly Parsley, Italian Parsley, Strawberries, Celery, Green Leaf Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, Cauliflower.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • ZUCCHINI BABY & YELLOW - Zucchini crops are flourishing in Mexico right now, bringing prices down.

  • TOMATO GRAPE MEDLEY - The Medley variety of grape tomatoes is currently being harvested from greenhouses in Mexico.

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • Tomato Prices Rise - Here’s the Recommended Substitute - Mexican Roma tomatoes are looking more stable than Round tomatoes, and greenhouse-grown tomatoes from Mexico, like TOV (Cluster) and Beefsteak varieties, offer good alternatives at a lower price per pound for this month. For cost relief during the holiday season, we suggest considering the following options:

    • TOMATO CLUSTER - 5KG (Product Code #03404)

    • TOMATO ROMA - 25LB (Product Code #03431)

    • TOMATO HOT HOUSE 28/32 - 15 LB (Product Code #07381)

Switching to these alternatives can help manage costs amid rising prices for Round tomatoes.

  • Baby Kale/Leafy Greens - The baby kale industry is facing a shortage expected to last until operations start in Yuma the week of the 11th, causing supply gaps. The transition will intensify this week, with the biggest impact over the next 2-3 weeks. Consider switching to full-size kale or baby arugula for the next week or two if you can!

  • Delivery Delays - With an expected 500,000 fans flocking to the back-to-back weekend shows, we’re likely to see some significant delivery delays downtown from Wednesday through Sunday. It might be a smart move to get your orders in early! The first concert kicks off on Thursday, November 14th. Read more about it here: Taylor Swift – The Eras Tour – City of Toronto

  • Seasonal Insect Presence in Broccoli, Cabbage & Cauliflower

Unusually warm late-summer temperatures have led to increased insect activity, especially cabbageworms and Diamondback moths, in crops from the Salinas Valley. While the presence of insects during this seasonal transition is normal, it's more prevalent this year due to the higher temperatures. With cooler weather on the way and harvests moving to Yuma, we expect this to clear up by the end of the month. We're inspecting all products carefully, but if you spot anything, our customer service team is here to help. Thank you for understanding as we move through this short seasonal phase!

  • Bell Peppers - Mexico is currently undergoing a transition in crop production from the Jalisco region to Sinaloa. As a result, prices are expected to increase for approximately two to three weeks until harvesting activities resume. A general reduction in prices for all varieties of peppers is anticipated during the first week of December.

  • Gailan - We are currently experiencing a significant shortage of Gailan, with limited availability due to quality issues from Ontario and high FOB prices from Mexico/USA. The expected delivery will be between Friday and Sunday, and I will keep you updated on any changes.

Closure Notice - Sunday

Heads up! To upgrade our PPRO system—the backbone of our business - we’ll be closed for all foodservice deliveries this Sunday, Nov 17, 2024. Thanks for your patience as we make ordering and fulfillment even better for you!

Product Changes

  • Conestoga Eggs - Effective tomorrow, we will transition from using brown Conestoga eggs to white ones.
