GET IN, LOSER. WE’RE PICKING APPLES!

Weekly Market Report for Sept 9th

Welcome to the Bondi Weekly Market Report — your rundown of what’s hot, what’s cooling off, and what’s coming next.

The nights are getting crisper, the produce lists a little shorter — it’s that time of year where “wrapping up” is more common than “just in.” But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of peak-season goodness to make the most of while it lasts like our first arrivals of local Paula Reds and Bartlett pears!

Let’s get into it!

📈 What’s Up? Prices are rising on Granny Smith apples, blueberries, black plums, Persian cucumbers, and broccoli crowns due to strong demand, weather-related delays, and tight supply across key growing regions.

📉 What’s Down? Increased supply and U.S. tariff removals are driving prices down on seedless watermelon, strawberries, Thai green chilies, limes, tomatoes, pomegranates, and green grapes.

🍑 Leaving Soon/Finished: We’re officially in “last call” territory. A number of summer favourites have wrapped up for the season, and a few more are winding down earlier than expected thanks to the cooler weather. Full details below.

🍎 New Arrivals: Ontario-grown Paula Reds and Bartlett Pears!

☀️ On the Horizon: Watch for Sicilian eggplant, Puntarelle, Honeynut squash, and Koginut squash coming into season over the next month.

🟥 Supply Watch: A few shorts from last week worth noting — details below.

🐟️ Pantry Pick of the Week: New School Plant-Based Salmon. We know what you’re thinking: Plant-based salmon? Really? But hear us out — this isn’t your typical beige brick of mystery protein.

Market Recap: What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • GRANNY SMITH APPLES (8349 & 1922) - New crop, high demand, and short supply are driving prices up.

  • BLUEBERRIES (2193) - It’s the end of the season in BC, and recent rain is causing arrival delays. Peru has just started shipping, but with product coming in by air, prices are higher.

  • BLACK PLUMS (3046) - High demand and tightening supply on quality product is driving prices up on black plums.

  • PERSIAN CUCUMBERS (2399) - Cucumbers across all sizes remain in tight supply during crop rotations. Expect elevated pricing for at least the next four weeks.

  • BROCCOLI CROWNS (2219) - Broccoli crowns are in limited supply due to weather pressure.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • SEEDLESS WATERMELON (3455) - With tariffs removed, seedless watermelon pricing is trending lower.

  • STRAWBERRIES (3346) - Higher supply and moderate demand is bringing down strawberry prices this week.

  • THAI GREEN CHILI PEPPERS (3024) - Supply has improved and quality is excellent, bringing prices down.

  • LIMES (2720) - Lime prices are easing as Mexican supply increases.

  • TOMATOES (4674, 4675 & 4676) - Tomato supplies remain stable and the removal of U.S. tariffs has brought down prices.

  • RED & YELLOW BELL PEPPERS (3010 & 3029) - Local Ontario field peppers are yielding at seasonal averages. Pricing is expected to remain stable for the next 3–4 weeks.

  • SHEPPARD PEPPERS (3015) - Stronger volumes on Sheppard peppers and quality is looking great.

  • POMEGRANATE (3062) - Expanded growing regions are putting downward pressure on pomegranate pricing.

  • GREEN SEEDLESS GRAPES (2548) - Strong green grape volumes coming out of California.

🍎 New Arrivals 🍎

New this week, we have Ontario Paula Red apples and Bartlett pears now available.

  • Paula Red Apples | Code 11720 The first local apples of the season are here — and Paula Reds are kicking things off with a tart little bang. Bright, crisp, and just the right amount of bite, they’re your cue that fall’s creeping in. Killer for baking, snacking, or tossing into a salad when you want that pop of acidity. Short window, so don’t sleep on ‘em.

  • Bartlett Pears | Code 3638 Ontario Bartletts are in and bringing that classic sweet-juicy pear flavour. Harvested green and ripening to golden yellow, they’re great on a cheese board, roasted with honey, or just eaten over the sink like a savage.

☀️On The Horizon☀️

Sicilian eggplant, puntarelle, and the return of fall favourites like honeynut and koginut squash are coming soon. Not quite here yet, but worth getting on your radar.

🚩Supply Watch🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • Blueberries | Code 2193 BC season is nearly finished, with rain causing harvest delays. Supply will begin transitioning to Peru within the week.

  • Figs | Code 2603 — Back in stock after a brief gap in arrivals from Greece.

  • Chanterelle Mushrooms | Code 4317 — The chanterelles we received last week were below our quality standards and not suitable for shipping, resulting in a short on customer orders.

  • Ontario Raspberries | Code 4353 — End of season, limited availability last week resulted in shorts.

  • Red Watercress | Code 4479 — Prorated orders due to weather-related crop issues — supply likely to remain inconsistent until November.

  • Sprout Basil (Cut) | Code 7757 — High demand continues, and even substitute products are selling out despite increased availability.

  • Flowers Petite Mix (Ontario) | Code 11561 — Low yields due to slower growth are impacting availability.

🐟️ Pantry Pick of the Week 🐟️

We know what you’re thinking: Plant-based salmon? Really?

But hear us out — this isn’t your typical beige brick of mystery protein. New School’s plant-based filet is next-gen stuff: it sears, flakes, and cooks like the real deal. Crispy crust. Tender interior. Rich, fatty mouthfeel. It even plates like salmon — without the fish.

Built for chefs, it performs in a hot pan and holds its own in elevated dishes.
