Weekly Market Report for January 21st

Welcome to the Bondi Weekly Market report, your go-to for all the highs & lows of the week. The produce is fresh, the insights are crisp, and the puns are ripe! Whether you’re here to stay ahead of market trends or just want to know what’s hot (besides our habanero peppers), we’ve got the scoop on everything your kitchen needs to know for this week. Speaking of kitchen needs, have you placed your order yet?

Here's a little preview of what we've got lined up for the week:

🥑 Avocados: Prices are climbing fast due to supply shortages. With the Super Bowl approaching and the guac & chip game intensifying, expect high demand and elevated prices for the next few weeks.

🍅 Tomatoes: Prices are dropping as Florida yields stabilize—great news for sauces, salads, and salsas (yay Super Bowl)! More savings ahead.

🫒 Olive Oil: Freight costs are up, pushing Partanna Olive Oil prices higher this week.

🫑 Bell Peppers: Mexico’s crops are stabilizing, boosting yields and dropping prices on red, yellow, and orange peppers. Stock up now!

🥚 Conestoga Eggs: BC’s egg crisis is causing shortages. Regular white eggs will be substituted until further notice. Thanks for your patience!

🟢 Egg Recall Update: All clear! Gray Ridge Farms confirmed that none of our eggs are affected by the recall. Rest easy—they’re fresh and safe!

Market Recap: What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • YELLOW ZUCCHINI - Colder temperatures in key growing regions are tightening supplies, leading to a rise in prices.

  • PARTANNA OLIVE OIL - Rising freight costs by both sea and land are driving up prices for Partanna Olive Oil this week. If it’s a pantry essential for you, adjust your orders accordingly.

  • RASPBERRIES - Prices are up this week due to tight market availability, but the berries we’re getting are top-notch so I wouldn’t skip it this week!

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • BELL PEPPERS - Mexico’s crops are finally stabilizing so we are seeing yields rise, driving costs down on all bell peppers.

  • TOMATOES - After a few weeks price hikes, we’re seeing yields normalize and prices returning to more seasonal levels.

  • LIME - Lime prices are dropping fast as both supply and quality bounce back to normal. Expect more savings in the coming week.

  • GREEN ONIONS - Supply has steadied, and prices are following suit, trending downward.

  • ICEBERG - With better availability this week, iceberg lettuce prices are taking a dip.

🌟 New & Newsworthy🌟

Looking to craft the perfect fruit platter or elevate your desserts, salads, and sides? Here are our top picks for fruits that are crushing it in the taste, color, and freshness department:

🌟 Raspberries: These raspberries are looking amazing this week—vibrant color, firm texture, and bursting with that sweet, tangy flavor. A perfect addition to any dish!

🍍 Pineapple: Sweet, ripe, and ready to shine! These pineapples are fantastic this week. For an even better experience, leave them out of the fridge for the day and let the sweetness reach its peak.

🍓 Strawberries: Full of flavour and the perfect balance of color all the way through. These strawberries are a must-have for your menu!

🫐 Blueberries: Firm, sweet, and delicious—these blueberries are hitting all the right notes. Just a slight price increase this week, but totally worth it for the quality!

🍊 Blood Oranges: Vibrant color and amazing flavor—these blood oranges are a showstopper this week! Perfect for adding a pop of color and zing to your dishes.

🍇 Red Grapes: These red grapes are looking and tasting great, but there’s a slight price bump this week. Plus, they’re a little smaller in size.

💚 Green Grapes: Big, firm, and bursting with excellent flavor—green grapes are a steal this week with a significant price drop! Don’t miss out on this sweet deal.

🍈 Cantaloupe: Two sizes to choose from this week! The 15 CT offers a brighter color and more intense flavour, while the 6 CT has more seeds (so a little more waste). Both are mild in flavor, but the 15 CT is the winner for taste.

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • 🥕 Baby Bunch Carrots (code 2267) - Supply has stabilized over the last few weeks!

  • 🥚Conestoga Eggs (code 6819) - The Canadian egg market is facing significant challenges due to the crisis in British Columbia, which led to the loss of 1.2 million hens and affected supply across the country. While we expect a shipment of Conestoga and regular eggs tomorrow, last week's delivery did not arrive. This may also be the case for this week's expected delivery, potentially resulting in shortages. We will be subbing in regular white eggs.

  • 🍈 Honeydew Melons - Tropical Storm Sara has made things a bit tricky for honeydew melons in South America, affecting both their supply and quality, which means there is significantly less supply to meet demand. It looks like these challenges might stick around for the next few weeks.

  • 🥑 Avocados - Avocado prices are set to escalate due to a current supply shortage, tracking 23% less volume than last year, alongside increased demand for the upcoming Super Bowl. Cold weather in producing areas and USDA restrictions on packing hours are exacerbating the situation, leading to higher field and market prices. Expect prices to rise again next week as producers prepare for peak demand.

  • 🍅 Hiiro Tomato Update: Nature Fresh is rotating crops, creating a 2-month gap on Hiiro tomatoes. Expected back the first week of March! In the meantime, sub in our cherry-on-the-vine option (code 5758).

  • 🧀 Albert’s Leap Ashley Goat Cheese: no longer available due to supply challenges through the manufacturer. We will still have the Finica goat cheese available for order, product (code 8093).

  • 🔽 Caulini - Limited availability right now! New shipment set to arrive on the 23rd but cases will be limited.

  • 🕛️ San Pellegrino Sparkling - New shipment was delayed leading to shortages last week but its back in stock now and ready for ordering!
