Local season continues to ramp up with plenty of exciting new additions this week! We’re seeing a few pricing shifts on select products, along with some supply issues worth flagging from Heartee Mushrooms and B&W Quality Growers (keep scrolling for all the details).

From seasonal staples to standout specialties, here’s what’s moving this week.

Let’s get into it.

📈 What’s Up? Prices are on the rise for Russet potatoes, green peppers, hot banana peppers, and gailan this week, driven by crop transitions, weather challenges, and tight supply—full breakdowns below.

📉 What’s Down? Prices are trending down on nectarines, cherries, green beans, corn, hot house tomatoes, taro root, and dragon fruit, with local crops ramping up and supply improving across the board.

🌟 New Local Arrivals: Welsh Bros sweet corn has officially landed! We’ve also got a small haul of specialty Ontario berries — gold raspberries, wild blueberries, and blackberries — but quantities are super limited, so don’t wait. Plus, some exciting new local additions from Top Tomato just hit the docks. Scroll down for all the details.

🍄 New Specialty Additions: We’ve got a fresh haul of stunning Lobster and Pioppino mushrooms — limited quantities, so grab them while you can!

🟥 Red Flags: A few bumps in the road this week…Heartee Mushrooms are temporarily unavailable (after current stock goes out) due to supplier issues, and B&W is recovering from a severe hailstorm that's impacting watercress and arugula supply. Red Watercress remains tight due to flooding in the southern U.S., while corn and habaneros are bouncing back after short-lived delays. Scroll down for the full scoop.

🧂 Pantry Pick of the Week: A chef’s staple for over a century — light, flaky, easy to control, and clean in flavour. Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt delivers precision seasoning every time.

Market Recap: What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • ASSORTED RUSSET POTATOES - We’ve now transitioned into new crop USA product — #1 quality from Washington, which as resulted in a price increase. Canadian crops are either finished or extremely old, with poor quality, so this shift ensures you're receiving the best available product.

  • GREEN PEPPERS (2988) - Local crops have had a slow start due to recent heat waves. With California and New Jersey struggling to meet demand, pricing has surged above seasonal norms. Local product is expected to arrive around July 27.

  • HOT BANANA PEPPERS (2962) - Florida’s season has wrapped, and supplies out of Mexico are limited—driving prices up. Local product is expected to start by the end of next week, which should help ease the pressure.

  • GAILAN (2515) - Hot weather is impacting crops, leading to limited availability and rising prices.

  • BRUSSELS SPROUTS & ICEBURG LETTUCE - Lower yields and supply challenges in California growing regions have reduced availability, leading to temporary shortages and price increases.

  • JALAPENO PEPPERS (2994) - Mexican supply remains tight, but relief is on the horizon—local Ontario peppers are expected to start by the end of next week, which should help ease pricing.

  • THAI GREEN CHILI (3024) & HABANERO PEPPERS (2989) - Limited air freight capacity out of the Dominican Republic is restricting supply and driving up prices. On top of that, extreme heat in the harvesting region is affecting overall quality.

  • CELERY ROOT (5437) - The Canadian season has wrapped, and we’re now transitioning to U.S. product. Expect elevated prices for the next 4–6 weeks until the new crop comes into full swing.

  • BROCCOLI (2213) - Heavy rainfall is disrupting harvests, while seasonal transitions are tightening supply. With steady demand holding strong, prices remain elevated.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • NECTARINE (6322) - Supply has improved significantly, with local product expected to start next week as well.

  • CHERRY BING (2328) - Cherry prices are dropping as local crops begin to roll in.

  • GREEN BEANS (2153) - Green bean prices are coming down as the local season gets underway.

  • ONTARIO CORN (2375) -Corn prices are coming down with a surge in supply and the arrival of local Ontario crops.

  • TARO ROOT (3376) - Taro root supply has improved and product is now readily available — expect prices to ease in the coming weeks.

  • DRAGON FRUIT (8393) - Dragon fruit prices are dipping thanks to improved supply out of Ecuador and Florida.

  • TOMATO HOT HOUSE (7381) - Hot house tomato prices are easing as Ontario greenhouses flush out a wave of medium-sized spring crop.

  • FENNEL POLLEN (8716) - We’re now sourcing from California instead of Italy, bringing a significant price drop, fresher product and better value.

🌟New Local Arrivals🌟

Ontario Golden Raspberries, Wild Blueberries & Blackberries | Code 3229, 2195 & 4835 * Limited & Fleeting!

When we say limited and fleeting, we mean it. Ontario Gold raspberries, wild blueberries, and blackberries are here—but in very limited quantities. You might want to run… they could be gone by the time you finish reading this.

Welsh Bros Sweet Corn | Code 8908

Our first pick of the season is finally here—and it’s no surprise why chefs love it. Ontario-grown, hand-harvested, incredibly fresh, perfectly juicy, and packed with flavour.

Fun Fact: Each corn plant produces two cobs, but only the top cob is fully developed. While machine harvesting grabs both, Welsh Bros hand-harvests each stalk—selecting only the top cob for optimal taste and quality.

If you’re looking for corn to be a star on your menu this summer, this is the cob for you.

Top Tomato Baby Artichokes | Code 6532

Top Tomato has cracked the code on growing artichokes in Ontario — a feat rarely seen in cooler climates. By mimicking a Mediterranean winter through a process called vernalization, they start seeds in greenhouses, expose young plants to near-zero temperatures for five weeks, then move them to the field to mature. The result? Beautiful, locally grown artichokes harvested at peak quality.

Their baby artichokes are available now!

Top Tomato Broccolette | Code 5310

Long, slender stems, small florets, and a mild, slightly peppery flavour. It cooks up quickly and shines when grilled, roasted, or sautéed. A chef favourite for its versatility and elegant presentation.

Napa Cabbage | Code 2234

We’ve officially made the switch to locally grown Napa cabbage from Quebec — fresh, crisp, and grown close to home.

🌟 New In Specialty🌟

Pioppino Mushrooms | Code 5077 – A European specialty that brings serious depth to any dish. Not wild-foraged, but still beautifully earthy, tender, and rich in umami. Limited quantities available – grab them while you can!

Lobster Mushrooms | Code 5299 – Wild-foraged from the US and wonderfully weird, these bright orange/red mushrooms get their name (and seafood-like aroma) from a natural fungus that transforms their host. Firm, meaty, and packed with umami, they’re a favourite for adding depth to pastas, risottos, and sautés. Limited availability while the season lasts!

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

Temporary Pause on Heartee Mushrooms

  • Heartee Mushrooms will be temporarily unavailable due to unforeseen issues on the supplier’s end. Once current stock is depleted, we will not be receiving any more for the foreseeable future. We will provide updates as soon as availability resumes.

B&W Farm Weather Impact - Watercress & Arugula Supply Alert

  • Over the weekend, our supplier B&W was hit by a severe hail and rainstorm, resulting in significant crop losses. As a result, they will be drastically reducing order fulfillment over the next two weeks while they recover.

Last Week’s Shortages:

  • Corn | Code 2374 & 2375 — The shift from U.S. to Ontario supply caused some temporary disruptions, but availability has stabilized.

  • Habanero Peppers | Code 2989 — Held at the airport awaiting clearance, causing a temporary delay. That said, things are now moving and we expect smooth availability going forward.

  • Red Watercress | Code 4479 — Extreme flooding in the southern U.S. has disrupted harvests, leading to significant product shortages. Limited availability is expected to continue for the next two weeks.
