A BERRY IMPORTANT UPDATE

Weekly Market Report for May 27th

Welcome to this week’s Market Report! No, you didn’t just fall for clickbait—local strawberries are officially arriving later this week, and it’s a sure sign that summer’s not far off.

The warehouse is buzzing. The drivers are running on caffeine and playlists. The reps are glued to their phones. Local product’s starting to roll in, and the pace is picking up fast. We’re not quite at full summer chaos—but we can see it from here. And honestly? We love this stretch.

But enough about us—here’s what we’ve got for you this week:

📈 What’s Up?: Prices are climbing on a few key items: select tomatoes, red peppers, broccoli crowns, and mini sweet peppers. Crop gaps and seasonal shifts are to blame, but things should ease up as local product kicks in.

📉 What’s Down?: Better supply = better pricing. Brussels sprouts, green beans, limes, blueberries, and watermelon are all trending down this week—and quality’s looking great across the board.

🌟 New Arrivals: Meet Bunster’s—Montreal born and bun-obsessed. Their signature Buntreal brioche bun (code 11229) is now in stock.

☀️On the Horizon: Here’s what to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks: local strawberries (landing later this week!), green strawberries, French breakfast radishes, baby turnips, kohlrabi, garlic scapes, English peas, and fava beans.

🟥 Red Flags: Heads up—we’re in a 2–3 week gap on gold, red, and striped baby beets due to quality issues in the growing region. Last week’s shortages (Castelvetrano olives, mayo, and green yuzu kosho) are mostly resolved—most items are back in stock or landing soon.

🍓 Local Farm Highlight: Tigchelaar Berry Farms is back! Their first harvest of local, day-neutral strawberries lands later this week—learn more about this local grower and keep an eye on the app, ordering site, and our socials, for the drop.

🍄 Produce Pick of the Week: Wild-foraged BC morels (code 5062) are peaking—great price, excellent quality, limited season.

🫒 Pantry Pick of the Week: Introducing Bondi’s private label olive oil (code 5674)—now available.

Let’s dive in…

Market Recap: What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • GAILAN - Gailan supply tightened over the weekend due to quality issues with the Mexican crop. We’ve started transitioning to local product, but pricing is expected to stay high for the next couple of weeks.

  • CLEMENTINE - We’re currently in a supply gap. South African fruit is expected to land in 3–4 weeks.

  • SELECT TOMATOES (4676 & 4674) - Due to regional transitions, weather challenges and the lingering effects of last year’s hurricanes, we’re anticipating a tighter supply window and elevated pricing on our USA grown Roma and Round tomatoes for the next 6–8 weeks. Our Local Roma program is tentatively set to begin in late July.

  • GREEN & RED SEEDLESS GRAPES - Volume is tight and pricing is up, but Mexico has just started harvesting, so we’re watching for improved supply in the weeks ahead.

  • MINI SWEET PEPPERS (4615) & RED PEPPERS (3010) - We’re in a gap out of Mexico, and Leamington is running short after a surge in demand from long weekend promotions. Expect elevated prices for the next 6–8 weeks until local supply ramps up.

  • YELLOW ZUCCHINI - The Mexican season is winding down, leading to tight supply and higher prices. Local harvest expected in 2–3 weeks.

  • BROCCOLI CROWN - Broccoli crowns are in short supply as Mexico wraps up its season. Expect elevated prices until local product becomes available in 2–3 weeks.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • BRUSSELS SPROUTS - Sizing and yields are improving out of Mexico, helping to stabilize the market and bring prices down.

  • WATERMELON SEEDLESS - Strong supply from both Florida and Mexico is putting downward pressure on pricing.

  • SHISHITO PEPPERS - Improved supply out of Mexico is helping to stabilize availability.

  • RASPBERRIES - Volume is up out of Mexico with excellent quality and shelf life this week.

  • GREEN BEANS - Georgia harvests are strong—pricing is down and quality is solid across the board.

  • LEEKS - Harvests out of California are up this week, with strong quality reported.

  • LIMES - Smaller sizes are more readily available thanks to favourable weather in Mexico, improving overall supply.

  • BLUEBERRIES - Increased supply from Mexico and Georgia is bringing prices down.

  • MACINTOSH APPLES - We’re back into #1 grade McIntosh apples from Quebec—quality looks great.

  • NAPA CABBAGBE - Yields are improving on the East Coast and California is peaking. With local season ~4 weeks away, prices are expected to gradually decline.

  • POBLANO & SERRANO PEPPERS - We’ve started receiving fresh Mexican poblanos and serranos this week—quality is looking good.

🍓 Local Farm Spotlight: Tigchelaar Berry Farm🍓

The first harvest of Tigchelaar Ontario strawberries is hitting our warehouse later this week!

So—what better time to shine a light on one of our favourite local growers?

The Tigchelaar family’s been growing strawberries for generations—starting in Stoney Creek, then Binbrook, and now Niagara, where brothers Dan and Jeff are carrying on the legacy.

Back in the early ’90s, they started growing day-neutral strawberries after studying how growers in other regions were extending their seasons. These plants fruit steadily from May through October, no matter the day length—giving chefs a longer stretch of peak local berries to work with.

Today, they’re one of Ontario’s leading strawberry growers—and a go-to for chefs who care about flavour, consistency, and local product that shows up strong.

Keep an eye on the app, ordering site, and socials—they’ll be landing soon!
