Weekly Market Report for September 10th

Welcome to the Bondi Weekly Market Report, your go-to for the highs and lows of the week. This week, we’re experiencing a few more lows than highs as local produce arrived earlier than expected this year, leading us to say goodbye to summer staples sooner than usual. We also faced shipment delays last week, but thanks to our dedicated drivers, everything arrived just in time for a busy Saturday. A big shout-out to our wonderful customers for their patience! Goodnews is, next weeks going to be great 🙌

Here’s a little preview of what’s lined up for the week:

Market Recap : What’s up, what’s down

📈Price Increases📈

These items are experiencing a price surge this week:

  • PURPLE CAULIFLOWER (code 2313) & ROMANESCO (4143) - Local product life cycle coming to an end in ~2 weeks, prices will slowly climb this month as harvest yeild decrease

  • DILL (code 2418) - Yields keep getting worse out of Ontario & Quebec causing price increases. Should regulate by mid-next week.

  • ASPARAGUS (code 2093) - Market is tight and price will remain high for another 2 weeks

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • POTATOES - we’re seeing some steep price adjustments in the potato category this week! The new crop from Ontario and Quebec is widely available, and we’ve transitioned most of our inventory to Canadian-grown potatoes. Look for the biggest price drops in A’s, C’s, and Yukon Chef’s. (Note: #1 Count Russet potatoes are still coming from the USA for about two more weeks.) Stay tuned for more updates!

🚩Red Flags🚩: Last Week's Supply & Quality Recap

  • Weekend Lettuce Shortages -On Saturday, there was a significant shortage of Heritage Blend, Spring Mix, and Spinach due to a delay in shipment from California. We’re very sorry to anyone that was affected by this. We don’t anticipate any other shortages to happen.

  • Shogun Maitakes - Over the weekend, we experienced a significant increase in sales, with 100 additional cases sold compared to the average of the past seven weeks. Consequently, we encountered an unexpected shortage of inventory. We are currently in the process of restocking and do not foresee any further shortages occurring.

  • Broccoli / Broccoli - We are currently facing shortages and quality issues with products from Salinas, California, and Central Mexico due to increased insect activity and damage from Diamondback moth larvae, worsened by extended high temperatures. While this type of activity is typical for late summer and early fall, the conditions have been harder to control this season. Growers are working hard to manage the situation, and we are closely monitoring quality on our end. This is expected to continue for the next 2-3 weeks.

  • Yellow Zucchini - The crop has been having a tough time this season. The plants are depleted, and there aren't many to be found. Unfortunately, diseases have wiped out 60% of the crops in Ontario and Quebec, causing ongoing shortages.

  • Burbank Potatoes - first batch of new crop potatoes from Quebec has arrived under the Eagle Export brand. Red Truck will be back with the new crop in the 2nd week of September.

  • Basil -Shortages were caused by shipment delays. We are back on track and fully in stock!

  • Clementines - I will be back by Thursday; we are dealing with a delayed shipment.

  • Bartlett Pears - Moving to local Ontario products as of today! This will alleviate the shortages that occurred last week.

Product Changes this week:

  • Oranges - Crop failure across all orange SKUs is causing shortages and delays in shipments of new products. We’ll continue with South African Navel oranges as a substitute for Valencia oranges at consistent pricing, with a size of 105 count. Hopefully, by the end of this week, we will switch to Midknight Valencia oranges. They may have occasional seeds but offer a sweeter taste and are ideal for juicing, will be available in 105 count and 88 count sizes.
